Abstract

Until recently, museums have been given relatively little consideration within cultural and media studies. Where they have been addressed, it is in their role as disciplinary and hegemonic institutions. This book sets out to demonstrate that museums deserve a more central place in studies of culture and of media. As well as showing how cultural and media theory can be applied to museums, it puts forward a museum theory of media. It discusses both historical and contemporary examples, from cabinets of curiosity, through avant-garde exhibition design, to science centres and the use of new media in museums. It draws on a diverse and eclectic range of theory. This book will be indispensible for anyone beginning to consider the social and cultural significance of virtual, immersive and interactive museums and exhibitions, and for those interested in materialist theories of culture.

Abstract

Going beyond strictly legal and property-oriented aspects of the restitution debate, restitution is considered as part of a larger set of processes of return that affect museums and collections, as well as notions of heritage and object status. Covering a range of case studies and a global geography, the authors aim to historicize and bring depth to contemporary debates in relation to both the return of material culture and human remains. Defined as contested holdings, differing museum collections ranging from fine arts to physical anthropology provide connections between the treatment and conceptualization of collections that generally occupy separate realms in the museum world.

Abstract

How does one turn a house containing artworks into a museum? How does one narrate the story of the lives that were lived there? How authentic can a retrospective reconstruction of interior spaces and their contents be? The contributors of 'The Modern Period Room,' drawn from a broad range of disciplines, consider the interiors of the modern era and their more recent reconstruction from a variety of different viewpoints. Beneath the conceptual and physical strategy of the representational technique of the modern period room lie numerous conflicting intentions. This collection of essays by design historians, architects and curators engages with these tensions. The authors explore themes and examples by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Truus Schroeder and Gerrit Rietveld, Ern Goldfinger and others in a bid to reveal the specific cultural encoding of presented interior spaces. The book's critical engagement with the issues and conventions which surround the modern period room will allow historians and theorists of architecture, design and social history to investigate the contexts in which this representational device has been used. The various models of period room enables the reader to understand just how dynamic, contributory and ultimately interventionist the presentation of the period room is in the process of architectural and design history making.
